Reading to learn
Reading to learn is aligned with our objectives to provide opportunities for students to read extensively and intensively in order to construct knowledge and ideas. Students will be exposed to different types of texts, literature, fiction and non-fiction, newspapers, web pages and articles. The scheme also aims at developing healthy habits and interests, as well as critical thinking towards controversial issues for making wise judgements..
To encourage students to read and enjoy reading, we make reading to be:
ĦE Pleasure
ĦE Knowledge and skills building
ĦE Growth of mind and character / civic & moral education
ĦE Language improvement
ĦE Problem-solving (academic, emotional, knowledge and skills)
ĦE Sharing (knowledge, skills, ideas, feelings)
ĦE Life-wide and life-long learning
Reading in the language subjects
The English and Chinese Departments have developed extensive reading materials to train and enhance reading which is to be integrated with speaking and writing capabilities. A variety of reading materials, including online reading, have been selected and established to suit the needs, interests and levels of students.
Students are required to subscribe to newspapers so as to develop regular reading habits and to broaden their knowledge. They are also required to buy readers of different styles and themes to increase their exposure and through the exchange readers programme, they have the opportunities to extend their scope of reading by reading books of various styles and themes.
Reading across the curriculum
All KLA subject heads will work with subject teachers to devise a reading plan with reading strategies to enhance reading among students. They need to focus at a few core skills to be implemented in each level. By means of reading across different subjects, it provides a broad and diverse mode of reading materials for students to develop the skills and attitude in reading to learn.
Morning Reading
To nurture a reading culture and to promote post-reading sharing, students have freedom to choose their own reading materials. They can read books, magazines, newspapers and non-textbook materials chosen by themselves in the morning reading session.A number of Chinese and English post-reading sharing sessions are held in each term. The activity aims at promoting reading for enjoyment and self-learning. Besides, students can learn how to share and express ideas through their presentations.
